Steamer
Frank H.
Goodyear
In
a thick fog, the Frank H. Goodyear was down bound Lake Huron loaded
with iron ore and was rammed in the port bow by the up bound James
B. Wood 35 miles off the tip of Michigan's Thumb. The Goodyear sank
in four minutes and took 19 of the 23 lives aboard to their deaths.
The discovery of the steamer in 2003 revealed the intact, ornately
sophisticated, luxury rail car that Mr. Goodyear had mounted to the
deck of the vessel for his own use while traveling on the steamer. A
number of other interesting items were discovered on the Goodyear
during the exploration and filming of the wreck.
